60 YEARS OF TOMIKI AIKIDO IN THE UK
60 YEARS OF TOMIKI AIKIDO IN THE UK

THIS WEBPAGE IS UPDATED REGULARLY, SO PLEASE COME BACK AGAIN SOON!

BACKGROUND
In 1959 Professor Tomiki's ideas included the creation of five basic hand
blade movements which could be practised as an exercise to do by oneself and also paired with a partner. In the latter case the partner is taken round in a circle to create a smooth, non-jerky movement. This practise will strengthen and help to develop power in the body.

The seminars this year will remind us of some of the elements practised 60 years ago by Senta Yamada Sensei.

FIVE BASIC HAND BLADE MOVEMENTS
These exercises are expansions of the smaller movements that might be used in Randori. Each exercise is first demonstrated without Uke in order to highlight the action. When practiced partnered, emphasis should be placed on continuous and smooth movement. The aim is to promote good balance and posture and to develop power in the movement by correctly focusing the whole body. These exercises reinforce the basic hand and foot movements, but in a natural and dynamic way. When demonstrated with a partner they show the true beauty of Aikido, and form part of the basic exercises for martial artists - Budo Taiso.

FIRST UK CLASS WITH SENTA YAMADA
60 YEARS OF TOMIKI AIKIDO IN THE UK
Yamada Sensei arrived in the UK on Saturday 26th September, 1959 having been invited by George Chew & Eric Dominy (the founders of The London Judo Society) to become a teacher there.  This was after disscussing matters with Mr Ichiro Hatta, who at that time was the club's Vice President.  The appointment was to teach Judo but because of his depth of knowledge in Aikido, the club took this opportunity in using his expertise in Aikido to start the first Tomiki Aikido school in England.  Yamada Sensei returned to Japan in 1965 but still kept contact with a number of his students in England, Europe and other countries that he had visited during his time in London.
